Meet Our Donors

We thank all our planned-gift donors for their generous support. Here are some of their stories.

+LT Terrence P. O’Boyle, USA ‘65

Terry O’Boyle, a 1965 Resident Student graduate from Gary, IN, was the Cadet Battalion Commander of the Marmion Butterfield Road Campus JROTC Battalion his senior year. Terry received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), from which he graduated in 1969 and was commissioned a 2LT in the U.S. Army. He was then assigned to duty in Vietnam, receiving a promotion to 1LT. He was killed-in-action on November 8, 1970.

Dr. Steve Gonczy ’65, in memory of his friend, classmate, and roommate at Marmion, established the LT Terrence P. O’Boyle, USA ‘65 Memorial Financial Aid Fund in Fall 2021 with his own generous gift. He invites his and Terry’s resident student classmates to also make generous gifts to this Fund which will help current Marmion students with need-based grants. The goal is to use only the annual interest earned so that it can be a “perpetual Fund” in Terry’s memory.

Father Tom Burr ’53 of Coppell TX, a retired priest of the Rockford Diocese, died on July 29, 2019. Father Tom was ordained later in life on June 9, 1973 by Bishop Arthur O’Neill of the Rockford Diocese. After Marmion Academy he graduated from Georgetown University and then had a successful career in investments. His first priestly assignment was as a parochial vicar at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Aurora; then a similar appointment to St. Laurence Parish, Elgin. After obtaining a Masters in Social Work from Loyola University, Chicago, Father Tom was assigned as Director of Catholic Charities for the Diocese. His last assignment was as pastor of St. Mary Parish, McHenry.

Father Tom appreciated his Marmion education and wanted others, especially young men from families with limited resources, to have the same opportunity. Father’s bequest to Marmion Academy of $72,250 established the Rev. Thomas Burr ’53 Memorial Financial Aid Fund. He also left a generous bequest for Catholic Charities of the Rockford Diocese.

+Thomas T. and +Janet Montiegel

Tom Montiegel of Sleepy Hollow died on October 23, 2019, three years after his wife Jan’s death on March 8, 2016. They were married just a few months short of fifty years at the time of her death.

Tom was the Associate Director of Development at Marmion Abbey/Marmion Academy (1995-2010) for two successful capital campaigns, and a good friend of Father Charles Reichenbacher OSB ‘59. Tom was the Alumni Director at Marquette University; Jan was the director of special events at Marquette. Tom was also Vice President for Development at Dayton University and at Northern Illinois University, before coming to Marmion.

They established the Jan and Tom Montiegel Academic Scholarship Fund, with a special emphasis for Hispanic students, which is now funded at over $150,000. In their estate Trust Fund, they specified an unrestricted gift of almost $500,000 for Marmion Academy. With the current pandemic crisis, a generous portion of this gift was assigned to the Guardian Angel Fund for student financial aid.
