A Message from John Diffey, President and CEO
In the early 1970s a group of Quakers in the Brandywine Valley of Southeastern Pennsylvania worried about the lack of options for older people in retirement. These pioneers were volunteers, drawn together by a shared concern. There was no formal organization; no money, no land, and certainly no buildings. But they were committed to finding a better way.
The Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of friends supported their efforts with a grant of $300,000. And we now celebrate the result: a Kendal system that includes affiliate communities, Kendal Outreach, Kendal Charitable Funds, and The Kendal Corporation. It continues to grow, continues to address opportunities for improvement in the quality of life for older people -- both on campus and far outside, extending the boundaries of community. Additional support from the estate of Emily Wilson made possible the nationwide awakening of Kendal's Untie the Elderly initiative.

“Is there any situation more distressing than an elderly person who has outlived his or her financial resources?”
The Kendal System has always been values-based. Our commitment is "to foster a culture of generosity, encouraging and developing full use of time, talent, and resources." Giving is, at heart, a matter of values. It reflects the intersection of your personal values and those of the Kendal community you may choose to support with a gift.
Thank you for visiting these pages. Here you will learn more about the many ways in which you can support Kendal and its mission. We hope you find this resource helpful as well as inspirational, as you consider gift options that can address your family priorities while helping future generations of the Kendal community. Many gifts to Kendal come as bequests. If that is your interest, you can find helpful language here.
As you consider your own response to the Kendal vision and experience, we will be delighted to answer any questions. Thank you for your interest in supporting Kendal.
