Meet Our Donors

We thank all our planned-gift donors for their generous support. Over the years, Goucher College’s accomplishments have been made possible through the generous and thoughtful philanthropic vision of alumnae/i and friends. Significant gifts and planned giving arrangements are increasingly important to ensure Goucher’s future success. Here are some of their stories.

Donor 1

Dorothy B. Krug

“Goucher College provided me with an excellent liberal arts education which enabled me to broaden my mind and pursue a career I could not have imagined and in a field quite foreign to my college major. And because I remained in Baltimore, I have been able to participate in the many lectures, cultural programs and community learning opportunities Goucher offers. I am therefore pleased to be able to make Goucher a major benefactor of my estate.”

Dr. Benjamin and Florence Silverman Berdann ’ 47

Benjamin and Florence Berdann say they were pleasantly surprised when they made a gift to Goucher. “Our gift to Goucher lowered our taxes and provided us with income for life,” says Florence. “We liked it so much; we made a second life-income gift.”

Elaine Freeman ’ 58

Elaine Freeman graduated from Goucher College in 1958 and retired in 2006, after an impressive career as vice president for corporate communications for Johns Hopkins Medicine. She credits Goucher for some of her success. "When my husband and I were updating our estate plans, we named Goucher as one of the beneficiaries of our retirement plans. It ’s our way of paying back for the freedom Goucher gave me to pursue a career in journalism while I was still a student."

Carol Fain Walters ’ 57

Fifty years after graduation from Goucher, Carol Fain Walters ’57 stays involved with the college in numerous ways. For example, she recently funded a charitable gift annuity. “It’s a win-win situation, “she says. “You can show your support for Goucher College, and at the same time provide income and tax deductions for yourself.”

Ethel Berney ’ 46
Trustee Emerita

Ethel Berney ’46 says Goucher College is part of her life, and it always will be. "Goucher taught me to think critically throughout my life. I wanted to make a significant gift without losing any income. I established a Goucher Gift Annuity that pays me a fixed annual income for the rest of my life. This pays more than I was earning on my investments and I liked the immediate income tax deduction. Best of all, my gift annuity allows me to create an enduring legacy for Goucher. I am thrilled with my decision.”

Ed and Susanne Haile

Ed Haile, a trustee emeritus of Goucher College, and his wife Susanne, are the parents of a Goucher student. “Sue and I have become devoted to Goucher,” says Ed. “We decided to make a bequest to Goucher in our wills because we think a bequest is a splendid way to express our passion for Goucher, insure its future, and help Goucher continue to support, encourage, and cultivate the endeavors of those to come.”

Donor 1

Nancy Patz ’ 52

Nancy Patz ’52 says her gift to Goucher benefits her as well. “With a gift annuity, I could give back to the college I love, while also receiving guaranteed income for the rest of my life,” she says.

Donor 1

Marvin and Renee Kent ’ 47

Renee Kent graduated from Goucher in 1947 and had an illustrious career as the art slide curator at Sarah Lawrence College. Now she and her husband have decided to give something back to Goucher. “Marvin and I decided a charitable gift annuity was the right plan. In fact, we have given several gift annuities to Goucher,” explained Renee. “We are reassured they will pay income to us for the rest of our lives.”
