Margaret Sprague Pillsbury

Margaret S. Pillsbury

“Don’t judge a book by its cover.”
~ Attributed to author George Elliot in 1860

Her regard was severe but her philanthropy anything but. Margaret Pillsbury and her husband George were Concord Hospital’s first, great benefactors. In 1891, George provided funds for what would become the Hospital we know today, and Margaret, through her own estate, established the first, free-bed fund for patients in 1901. Why is this important today? Because you may have clients like Mr. and Mrs. Pillsbury and want to know that:

  • Concord Hospital is supported by a separately incorporated, not-for-profit support organization recognized by both federal and state government. It’s called Concord Hospital Trust;
  • What does the Trust do? It provides a dedicated and visible focus on philanthropy and ensures the highest degree of stewardship on behalf of donors;
  • Today, the Trust honors donors who make estate or life-income gifts through the Margaret S. Pillsbury Society;
  • Like Margaret’s free-bed fund, the Trust helps donors establish permanent, named funds for gifts of $25,000 or more. There are over 40 funds representing over $40 million working for mission specific purposes;
  • The Trust works cooperatively with Advisors to facilitate a donor’s intentions and help choose the optimal giving vehicle, whether a trust, an annuity or a will;
  • All types of gifts are accepted by Concord Hospital Trust: retirement accounts, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, savings accounts/CDs, cash, insurance policies, and real and personal property;
  • There is a standing committee of the Trust Board devoted to Stewardship. The Committee ensures funds are used in accordance with donors’ wishes and informs community members how contributions are used to support the Hospital’s mission.
