Dr. Lowell G. Kafer and Mrs. Sara L. Kafer

name

Dr. Lowell and Mrs. Sara Kafer, longtime supporters of Africa University, are honored to become members of the Richard E. “Dick” Reeves Legacy Society. Lowell and Sara met while graduate students at Michigan State University and married in 1962. They have a son, David of Houston, TX; a daughter, Catherine Barham of Jensen Beach, FL; and four terrific grandchildren.

Sara, after the children were off to college, became an elementary and middle school teacher. Later, she was a counselor at the Marquette Women’s Center. Lowell, after earning his PhD from Michigan State University, began a 30-year career at Northern Michigan University where he served in a number of administrative positions, including Dean of Students; Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs; and Dean of the College of Behavioral Sciences, Human Services and Education. Lowell retired as Professor of Education Emeritus.

In 1995, upon retirement, the Kafers served as Volunteers-in-Mission at Africa University. Upon reflection, they say that this time was the most exciting and rewarding experience of their lives. Lowell’s work assignment was to work with a faculty committee to establish the new Faculty of Education, and Sara’s work assignment was to help teach English to those students who came from non-English speaking countries.

Upon their return to the United States, the Kafers moved to Stuart, FL where they became very involved at Trinity United Methodist Church in Jensen Beach. In addition, Sara volunteers at Martin Memorial Hospital and serves as president of P.E.O. Chapter Cl, a philanthropic education organization which seeks to advance the education of women. Lowell teaches the Bible to seniors and coordinated communion and visitation to the hospitalized and shut-ins. In their spare time, they enjoy their grandchildren, traveling the world, and speaking to groups about Africa University.
